Summer Camp 2025: Learning Through Local Traditions and Marine Conservation

Students at Lighthouse International School, Rawai recently wrapped up an unforgettable experience during the Lighthouse Camp 2025, where learning went beyond the classroom and into the heart of Thai culture and marine life. Held in the beautiful coastal area of Ko Kaew, the camp offered hands-on activities that combined tradition, creativity, and environmental care.

One of the highlights was a ride on a longtail boat, a traditional Thai mode of transport still widely used by local fishermen and island communities. The experience gave students a glimpse into the cultural and historical importance of these boats, offering both adventure and insight.

The camp also introduced students to the art of fishing and fish feeding. They learned basic fishing techniques and developed a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. Feeding the fish allowed students to observe marine life up close and gain a new appreciation for local ecosystems.

Creativity played a big role in the camp as well. Students tried their hand at cloth dyeing, exploring traditional Thai methods and patterns. This activity allowed them to express themselves while learning about Thai textile traditions. They also participated in Thai dessert making, working with local ingredients and recipes to create delicious treats, building both culinary skills and cultural awareness.

The most meaningful part of the camp was the opportunity to give back to the environment. After learning about coral reefs and their importance to marine biodiversity, students helped return two-month-old coral fragments back into the sea. This hands-on conservation effort was not only educational but also gave students a sense of responsibility and pride in helping to protect ocean life.
